Reviews are the currency of local business — they decide map-pack rankings, tiebreaks against competitors, and whether a referral survives the Google check. Yet most Houston businesses collect them accidentally: a burst when someone remembers, then months of silence. The businesses that dominate their categories treat reviews as a production system.
The one principle: timing beats technique
People leave reviews at the peak of the experience, not a week later. The water heater works, the smile is fixed, the yard looks incredible — that hour is your window. Every day of delay cuts response rates roughly in half. This is why "we’ll email a survey Friday" produces nothing and a text at job completion produces a stream.
The system (all of it automatable)
- Trigger on completion. Job marked done → review text fires within the hour: short, personal, direct link to your Google review form. No portals, no "leave us feedback on the platform of your choice" — one tap, one destination.
- The ask, worded right. "It was great taking care of your AC today! If you have 30 seconds, a Google review really helps our small team: [link]" — human, specific, easy to decline. Have techs mention it at handoff and the text converts double.
- One polite nudge three days later for non-responders. Then stop; persistence past two asks costs goodwill.
- Reply to everything within a couple of days. Replies are read by every future customer, and consistent engagement is its own ranking signal.
What not to do (Google checks)
No incentives for reviews, no review-gating (asking only happy customers via a filter survey — explicitly against policy and detectable), no bulk campaigns to years-old customer lists, and never, ever purchased reviews — the penalty is profile suppression, the exact opposite of the goal. The negative review you’ll occasionally get is survivable; a filtered or fake-looking profile isn’t.
The compounding return
Fifteen new reviews a month is unremarkable as a week’s effort and utterly dominant as a year’s: 180 fresh reviews while competitors add nine. That gap wins map packs, LSA rankings, and every comparison shopper’s tiebreak — and it’s a wholly-owned asset no algorithm change repossesses.
We wire this system into job completion as standard practice — it’s the flywheel of everything else we build. Want it running by next week? Talk to our AI or email hello@mediajunkie.io.
